The Australian Open (AO), one of the world’s largest tennis championships, has teamed with renowned virtual reality platform Decentraland to bring this year’s event to the metaverse, as previously reported.

AO Decentraland is set to start on January 17, 2022. The program will provide fans with free access and exploration of the Australian Open from anywhere in the world.

The tournament organizers stated that the greatest parts of Melbourne Park, the official stadium of the Australian Open Grand Slam tennis competition, will be replicated in AO Decentraland.

Fans may roam throughout the city in the virtual world to obtain access to the Beach House and the Gram Slam Oval, where current and past matches will be presented on screens.

According to Ridley Plummer, Australian Tennis Project Manager, the Australian Open’s decision to completely integrate itself into the metaverse was critical in offering expanded coverage and access to the tournament’s events, including live and past matches and press conferences.

Plummer added:

“We want the AO to be the world’s most accessible and inclusive sports and entertainment event, and with the unique challenges fans have faced getting to Melbourne we’ve fast-tracked our launch into the Metaverse,”

Notably, the AO Decentraland will be available for the length of the live events, which will take place from January 17, 2022 to January 30, 2022.

During this time, fans can expect to see player drop-ins from tennis superstars like Mark Philippoussis and Todd Woodbridge, as well as behind-the-scenes video of live matches from over 300 cameras surrounding the home stadium.

Fans may also look forward to a reverse feed from the AO Decentraland fed on AO screens and courtside LEDs in between games, community events, and gamification to obtain various NFTs and VR tennis games.
