Crypto YouTuber Series Simultaneously Hacked Accounts – Can YouTube Get Away With It?

Hackers hacked multiple popular crypto YouTuber accounts on Jan. 23. These accounts posted unauthorized videos with texts urging viewers to deposit funds into the hacker’s wallet.

Follow reportAccounts hacked include: BitBoy Crypto, Altcoin Buzz, Box Mining, Floyd Mayweather, Ivan on Tech, The Moon, etc.

The Binance Smart Chain wallet address shown in the scam videos has received a total of 9 transactions in BNB totaling around $850 at the time of writing.

Crypto YouTuber channel Boxbroken posted a video without his permission.

“Fortunately, within two minutes of the video posting, we discovered the issue and were able to remove it. At that point, there were views and comments from my community.”

He also scanned for internal viruses but found no malicious code or bugs that would have allowed the hacker to access the account.

“Looks like YouTube is to blame.”

“Many crypto YouTubers (including me) were hacked on January 23rd. All posting scam videos at the same time – Ivan on Tech, Andreas, BitBoy Crypto, Altcoin Buzz, Floyd Mayweather, Crypto Banter, CoinMarketCap. I have 2FA enabled.”

A Reddit post by user “9Oh8m8” suggested that the hacker appeared to have accessed the account using a SIM swapping scam, which allowed them to bypass two-factor authentication (2FA).

“All accounts have posted videos titled ‘A World of Money.’ The videos share the same address and description and trick viewers into depositing USDT/USDC/BNB/ETH to receive a new cryptocurrency called OWCY.”

However, Gu doesn’t believe that the hack was caused by SIM card swapping as there are no credentials for his personal Google account.

“If it had been a SIM swap I would have lost access to my phone but that didn’t happen. What we noticed is that branded accounts (no logins. Branded YouTube accounts linked to individuals) have logins from the Philippines. Most likely, this is a hack by YouTube or a dubious employee. Only then can multiple accounts be logged in at the same time.”

Founder and CEO Shash Gupta of YouTube channel Altcoin Buzz added that around 12:00 p.m. Sunday, they realized something was wrong when an unauthorized video was posted on their channel.

“It’s not clear what happened. I’m working with YouTube to understand the issue and prevent future violations.”

Another crypto YouTuber, Richard Heart, has tweet at 04:30 (UTC) that his channel was blocked during a live stream, suggesting that YouTube may have known about the incident.
