Picasso’s Descendants Will Sell 1,010 NFTs Linked To His Never-Before-Seen Ceramic Work

Heirs of Pablo Picasso, a famous 20th-century Spanish artist, are planning to auction off his 1,010 digital art pieces of one of his ceramic works that have never before been seen publicly.

Picasso enthusiasts will soon be able to purchase NFTs related to his ceramic work, according to Marina Picasso, his granddaughter. She has said the treasured pottery piece goes back to October 1958, when she was a child.

“We’re trying to build a bridge between the NFT world and the fine art world,” said Florian Picasso, the artist’s great-grandson said.

Only a slice of the underside of the work linked to the NFTs, a ceramic piece roughly the size of a huge salad bowl, is being shown by his descendants. The exposed parts show forms like a thick yellow line, a dribbling green splotch, and a brushed-on number “58” at the base.

“It’s a work that represents a face, and it’s very expressive,” Marina said. “It’s joyful, happy. It represents life … It’s one of those objects that have been part of our life, our intimate lives — my life with my children.”

In March, Sotheby’s will host an auction that will include a one-of-a-kind NFT as well as the actual ceramic bowl. A first-phase online auction of other over 1,000 NFTs will begin on Friday via the Nifty Gateway and Origin Protocol platforms.

“Everything is evolving,” said Florian Picasso, insisting that the NFT honors his great grandfather.

“I think it fits within Picasso’s legacies because we are paying tribute to him and his way of working, which was always being creative,” he said.

Some of the funds will be donated, with one share going to a charity aimed at overcoming a nursing shortage and another to a nonprofit group aimed at reducing carbon in the atmosphere. The NFTs will also include music composed by Florian Picasso, a DJ and music producer, as well as composer John Legend and rapper Nas.
