AssangeDAO, A DAO Tries To Free WikiLeaks Founder, Has Raised Nearly $39M

AssangeDAO, founded by “a collection of cypherpunks,” is collecting donations to fight for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange’s freedom.

AssangeDAO is raising funds to bid on a one-off NFT collaboration between Julian Assange and Pak in an effort to help the Wikileaks founder fight extradition to the United States. Anybody may contribute to the fund, and contributors earn an equal quantity of JUSTICE, the governance token. AssangeDAO has raised roughly $39 million so far (12,673 Ether).

Assange has been charged on 18 counts in relation to the publication of confidential information by Wikileaks that showed misconduct and double-dealing by U.S. federal agencies. If extradited to the United States, the Wikileaks founder could face a 175-year sentence.

AssangeDAO was founded the day after the US won its appeal against a British court ruling that banned Assange’s extradition. The DAO claims to be controlled by “cypherpunks seeking to free Assange from the legacy justice system,” and it plans to generate funds to cover Assange’s legal bills. The DAO is raising funds to bid on Censored NFT in order to achieve this aim. If AssangeDAO wins the bid for the NFT, the NFT will be held by the DAO, and its contributors will be given the DAO’s governance token, JUSTICE, in proportion to their ETH contributions. Contributors will then decide via governance voting what to do with the NFT and the future roadmap of the DAO.

The Censored NFT was created by Pak, a crypto artist whose last NFT project Merge sold for a total of $91.8 million last December. This NFT is divided into two parts: a dynamic one-of-a-kind NFT that will be auctioned off, and an open edition that Pak said would be “for you all to participate.” The auction will take place on February 7, and the profits will go toward Assange’s legal bills.
