AssangeDAO completes $54.2 million fundraiser to help Julian regain his freedom

AssangeDAO, the decentralized autonomous organization that legally supports Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, has ended its fundraising with 17,422 Ether (ETH) worth about $54.2 million.

Previously, AssangeDAO intended to use the funds for a unique NFT bid from a drop called “Censored” created by digital artist Pak in collaboration with Assange.

Proceeds from the sale will go to Assange’s defense fund and awareness-raising campaigns against Britain’s extradition to the US this month.

Assange has been in a UK prison for three years as US prosecutors seek to bring him to justice on espionage charges. Supporters say Assange is a whistleblower, journalist and publisher for freedom.

Right now, Pak and Assange’s unique NFT One Thousand Thirty Four has the top bid of 4,242.42 Ether (about $13 million USD) and the auction ends today. The NFT collection was launched on February 7, which is also the deadline for Assange’s lawyers to defend against his extradition.

Assange’s $54.2 million mark marks the largest raise yet by a DAO leveraging Juicebox, the crowdfunding hosting platform, beating ConstitutionDAO, which raised $49 million from the community by the end of 2021, to bid on a first edition of the United States Constitution.

More than 10,000 people have donate Fundraising activities demonstrating strong support for Assange and the values around transparency that he and Wikileaks stand for.

Speaking to Artnet earlier this week, Pak pointed out that Assange is exactly what they were looking for, as was the message behind their latest drop:

“I love creating different mechanisms to get my message across. For Censored, this drop needed a good reason to exist, and that was Julian. The biggest message will be moderated as usual.”

The Censored Drop also includes an open version with an unlimited number of mints within a given timeframe, and Pak explained that the funds raised will be donated to organizations for “freedom of information, privacy, digital investment, education, health, human and animal rights.” .

“In other words, anything that gets censored will eventually come back to people,” Pak said.
