Dozens of CryptoPunk’s NFTs have been sold for over a million dollars, but yesterday this collection broke the previous record with sales of around $24 million.
Cryptopunks is one of the first famous NFT projects in the world. These are encrypted works of art in the form of 24×24 pixel images representing NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain platform. The Cryptopunks collection consists of 10,000 small punks that do not overlap to inspire other projects while promoting the later growth of the ERC721 token.
The boom in the NFT industry over the past year resulted in multi-million dollar CryptoPunks transactions.
It includes different designs, such as humans, aliens, monkeys, zombies and others.
On Saturday, CryptoPunk #5822 received 8,000 ETH (worth around $23.7 million). Deepak Thapliyal, CEO of cloud blockchain infrastructure company Chain, acquired NFT directly from CryptoPunks developer Larva Labs’ online marketplace.
The sale of CryptoPunk #5822 is confirmed by CryptoPunk’s bot Twitter and is believed to be NFT CryptoPunk’s largest purchase in history.
The incredible 8,000 ETH transaction broke the previous record of selling “COVID Alien” CryptoPunk #7523 at Sotheby’s “Native Digital: A Curated NFT Sale” in June 2021. The previous CryptoPunk sale was $11.8 million, purchased from DraftKings’ largest shareholder, Shalom Meckenzie, at a Sotheby’s auction in June 2021.
Thapliyal tweeted that he was using leverage through DeFi protocol Compound Finance to pay for CryptoPunk, saying Compound founder Robert Leshner: “Thanks to Compound Finance, I can keep my ETH when I buy it.”
Punk breaks a new record for the rarest avatar type: Alien. Out of the entire collection of 10,000 avatars, there are only nine CryptoPunk aliens. This particular punk was last sold in July 2017 for 8 ETH, or over $1,600 at the time.
Saturday’s sale marked the fourth all-time high for an NFT.
Beeple’s “Everydays: The First 5,000 Days” holds the record for NFT singles at $69.3 million compared to March last year.
Artist Pak’s NFT “Clock” sales for AssangeDAO this week ranked second at nearly $54 million. Featuring a mixed physical/digital sculpture by Beeple and NFT, “Human One” took third place and sold for $29 million in November.
According to CryptoSlam, the CryptoPunks collection released by Larva Labs as a free project has generated over $2 billion in secondary trade volume so far.
