According to trademark attorney Josh Gerben, the corporation has applied for ten trademarks for the virtual realm.
The application, which was submitted on February 4, mentions intentions for a “virtual restaurant that offers both real and virtual goods.”
McDonald’s also wants to build a “virtual restaurant with home delivery.” In addition, the restaurant will offer ‘downloadable media files,’ such as artwork, audio and video files, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
In addition, the fast-food company would like to incorporate its McCafe franchise in its metaverse ambitions. The company plans to provide entertainment services such as “real and virtual online concerts and other virtual events.”
If these ambitions come to pass, the fast-food company will be competing with other virtual concert organisers. These kind of performances are getting increasingly popular because they eliminate geographical restrictions that prohibit fans and performers from engaging. They would also decrease the expense of touring and, maybe, the chance of catching the Covid-19 virus.
The McDonald’s trademark registration came a day after Panera Bread, a bakery and café business, submitted a similar application.
It plans to launch PANERAVERSE, a virtual chain of restaurants and cafés.Panera Bread, like McDonald’s, will provide downloaded and NFT content, virtual food and drinks, and virtual gathering areas.
Other occurrences hint to a rise in metaverse usage, even if it is still in its early phases. Despite the central bank’s objection, more than 1300 Chinese enterprises submitted applications for registration of metaverse trademarks at the end of last year. Silicon Valley tech giants such as Apple, Meta, and Microsoft are also dabbling in this arena.
