Tesla will soon accept the cryptocurrency Dogecoin as payment at its turbochargers in Santa Monica. This message was tweeted by Tesla Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elon Musk on Saturday morning, February 19, 2022.
Musk confirmed that the Santa Monica Supercharger will officially accept Dogecoin as a payment method, making it the first Supercharger on the Tesla Network to accept cryptocurrency as a payment method.
Rayan Zohoury, founder of Tesla Console, confirmed in a tweet that just 10 minutes after the offer to accept Dogecoin, Santa Monica booster stations were full of customers. Musk responded to the offer, giving details of his plans to open dinners or go turbocharged in theaters. Customers can certainly make payments in Dogecoin against both pre-planned facilities.
The latest advances are an ongoing part of Musk’s December announcement that electric car maker Tesla will be testing Dogecoin as a payment method in the company’s merchandise. “Tesla will buy some merchandise with Doge and see how it goes,” Musk said in a tweet.
The Supercharger station in Santa Monica, California on Santa Monica Avenue opened yesterday, making it the first Supercharger station on the Tesla network to accept Dogecoin as a payment method. The Supercharger station is currently incomplete. Tesla has yet another development site for this project, and Musk confirmed there will be no more 50-year-old seating or the drive-in theater once planned for the site. Instead, this will be added to another Supercharger facility now planned for Hollywood.
Located at 1421-1425 Santa Monica Avenue, the new Supercharger occupies one of two lots Tesla purchased for the project. The other is located at 1401 Santa Monica Boulevard. Technically, the 1421-1425 is an additional batch of the project and will feature a total of 26 turbochargers upon completion.
At 1401 Santa Monica Avenue is the main lot of the Santa Monica Supercharger. The SpaceX CEO had previously planned to build a ’50s-style drive-in movie theater and diner. Tesla added several “Easter eggs” to the property, even custom-sized parking lots. With most of the lot measuring 9 feet wide by default, with some even 12 feet, this could portend the introduction of more cybertruck-focused parking lots when new Supercharger yards be built.
However, Musk has confirmed that Batch 1401 will not have these features. Instead, they are added to a supercharging facility in Hollywood.
The SpaceX CEO favored Dogecoin over other cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, in recent interviews with the forthcoming Time Magazine.
Musk said;
“The transaction value of bitcoin is small and the cost per transaction is high. It is therefore suitable as a store of value, at least on a spatial level. But fundamentally, Bitcoin is not a good substitute for transaction currency.
It should be noted that the development of Dogecoin is a silly joke, although it performs much better transactions than other cryptocurrencies.
