On February 25, a Patreon charitable fundraising page for the Ukrainian military was shut down, while donations to the organization’s Bitcoin wallet accelerated to surpass $1 million.
Come Back Alive, a Kyiv-based nonprofit organization founded in 2014, says the funds will be used to purchase military equipment for Ukrainian soldiers, including armor and medical kits.
Director Taras Chmut said the organization had been receiving small donations for several months, but when Russia invaded, it received over $300,000 in donations, many of which were less than $1,000.
On the crypto philanthropy platform The Giving Block, digital asset donations increased by 1,558% in 2021, indicating that crypto is becoming a more efficient means of charity and donations.
Come Back Alive was accepting fiat donations on Patreon, but the page has been inaccessible since Thursday, according to pro-Ukraine donors on social media.
In a blog post, Patreon stated that using its services to support military funding is against the company’s policies and that the money in the charity’s account will be returned to donors.
A Ukraine DAO which can gain money in the crypto space has established on February 25 and announced by a Twitter account @pussyriot. They said their goal is “to raise funds to donate to Ukrainian civilian organizations who help those suffering from the war that Putin started in Ukraine,” and they will buy a Ukrainian flag or an NFT to support this nation.
