The sandbox-style video game Minecraft, released in 2011, gets a Web3 update with NFT Wolds thanks to some non-Microsoft developers.
According to Decypt News, Microsoft’s Minecraft game has entered Web 3 technology with NFT Worlds installed on the Polygon network. NFT Worlds has been registered as a polygon-based project that can be integrated into a Minecraft server using Web 3 technology. The blockchain layer of NFT Worlds on Minecraft allows players to access Web3 features such as an online store where they can purchase items to experience Minecraft using the $WRLD ERC-20 token.
Since some Minecraft software is open source, anyone with technical knowledge can create their own game on this network. But Minecraft doesn’t have a solid economy like rival Roblox, which has its own digital currency called Robux.
NFT Worlds offers players a metaverse experience that promises to be fun for Minecraft fans and NFT collectors alike.
Minecraft’s player base has grown since Microsoft bought Minecraft developer Mojang Studios for $2.5 billion in 2014. The game has 131 million monthly active users in 2020 and over 141 million monthly active users in 2021. NFT Worlds logged more than 26,000 logged game hours in three days and interest also increased. From January to February of this year, the average price of an NFT World suddenly increased by 10 Ethereum or $26,000 after months of largely stabilizing.
NFT Worlds co-founder ArkDev said on his Twitter account on Wednesday that there are concerns that the worlds are too large, without any sort of transport or portal system, making it impossible for players to see the entire land in the game to traverse.
ArkDev notes that Minecraft is a large, custom game development system. In terms of future developments, the NFT Worlds team aims to provide the most cost-effective gaming experience possible by using the EIP-2771 interface, which offers cheaper transaction fees than ETH. In addition, NFT Worlds wanted to create a kind of global auction to function as an online marketplace.
Building a Web3 world on top of an existing game-centric world is risky and means Microsoft could take legal action to end the project at any time. To avoid this, they work closely with representatives from Microsoft to ensure that they do not violate Minecraft’s End User License Agreement (EULA) at any stage of development.
