According to a person familiar with the deal, the partnership is a memorandum of understanding, which means Krafton can still terminate the agreement without legal repercussions.
PUBG is one of the most popular downloaded games on the Steam platform, with tens of millions of active players; it was claimed that as many as 696,000 active users were playing continuously in early 2022. The game is only second in popularity to Epic Games’ Fortnite in the battle-royale genre.
According to a press release, Krafton’s objectives for the Solana Labs alliance include the “development and operation of blockchain and NFT-based games and services.”
HyungChul Park, lead of Krafton’s Web 3 division, said in the press release:
“Krafton will continuously see ways to work closely with blockchain companies like Solana Labs as we work toward establishing our Web 3 ecosystem. Solana represents the best of the Web 3.0 ecosystem and its technologies. Through this cooperation, Krafton will acquire the insight needed to accelerate its investment in and output of blockchain-based experiences.”
The news comes at a time when attitudes about NFT adoption in the conventional gaming sector remain cautious, owing to previous incidents of reaction against the technology.
The PUBG publisher invested $6.6 million in two Korean-based NFT businesses in February to help expand out its fledgling Web 3 activities.
