According to a document published in the Federal Register on Friday, President Joe Biden tasked the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to prepare a report on the “potential for digital assets to impede or advance efforts to combat climate change and the transition to a clean and reliable electricity grid” in his executive order on crypto issued earlier this month.
The energy footprint of crypto – particularly energy-intensive proof-of-work crypto mining – has become a hot topic in recent years, with politicians throughout the world proposing to ban proof-of-work mining due to environmental concerns.
Crypto and blockchain technology has also been proposed as a possible solution to environmental issues such as carbon accounting and lowering gas flaring emissions.
The OSTP’s upcoming study is one attempt to figure out how crypto affects the environment.
Those interested in sharing their ideas with the White House have until May 9 to do so.
