Forum Metaverse, which was led by the slogan “The future belongs to those who design it,” attracted over 2000 attendees from the congress, ministries, and the presidency. Upon arrival, guests could experience the metaverse through various demonstrations before moving on to discussion sessions to debate the opportunities and risks.
President Erdoğan started the event by emphasizing the importance of digital transformation. Referring to the global movement, President Erdoğan declared 2022 the “digital mobilization year,” and stated that Turkey would produce its own digitalization to prevent youth from becoming attached to foreign cultures. He stated:
“We won’t know peace without producing our authentic technologies, software and content. We can’t look to the future with confidence if the future of our nation’s minds and hearts grow dependent on channels of other nations.”
Regardless of the ethnocentricity of his motivation, President Erdoğan made it absolutely clear that Turkey would be heavily investing in the metaverse.
Following President Erdoğan’s lead, Turkey’s Minister of Education, Mahmut Özer, declared that the education sector would be the first step toward implementing the metaverse.
According to Özer, several fields that necessitate hands-on technical training have been chosen as pilot programs to begin metaverse training. While the necessary experiences are being developed, teachers will be educated on the metaverse at the same time. Following the success of these programs, other areas of education will be considered for metaverse implications.
Many organizations, according to Özer, lacked a proper trainer to raise the apprentices. The use of the metaverse will assist in overcoming this issue by bringing apprentices from all over Turkey together prior to the presence of a certified trainer. This will increase both the number of apprentices and the quality of their training. Özer said:
“We aim at 1 million apprentices by the end of 2022. Many organizations do not have a trainer. All related personnel is trying to get their training. Hopefully, with this project, the number of master apprentices will exceed 400 by May.”
Özer mentioned that the annual budget for these programs is 282 million lira, or approximately $19 million. He concluded by stating that, in addition to creating metaverses for technical training, a part of this budget will be spent on developing developers capable of creating “authentic metaverse content,” as President Erdoğan defined it.
