Fake Azuki NFT Airdrop Posted on Hacked Indian Government’s Twitter Account

After hacking many verified Twitter accounts in recent days, an unidentified hacker tried to scam people with a dubious NFT airdrop. The hacker lured naive collectors by using well-known names in the NFT market, such as Azuki and Bored Apes Yacht Club (BAYC).

The first attack targeted Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who controls Uttar Pradesh, India’s fourth-largest state by land area. According to a state official post, the hacker got access to Adityanath’s verified profile on Saturday (April 9, 2022) and posted several tweets.

According to reports, the Chief Minister’s office account changed its profile photo from an image of Adityanath to an NFT from the BAYC collections. Following the event, Uttar Pradesh authorities filed a report with the Lucknow Cyber Crimes Police Unit. As of the time of writing, no concrete results had been obtained from continuing investigations.

Soon after, the official Uttar Pradesh state government handle was compromised as well. On Monday (April 11, 2022), the account tweeted a link to a page where people could claim free NFTs. Users were redirected to a suspicious website with the domain name ‘beanz.army’. Below is an example from the website:

“We have decided to give back to our community by distributing extra airdrop claims to holders of Azuki and other NFTs. Claim your airdrop of BEANZ and become involved with the Azuki ecosystem using the interactive Azuki NFT.”

While it is unknown whether the assaults were carried out by the same person or group, authorities claim that all hacked accounts have been recovered and warn that those involved could face harsh punishment.
