As the number of organizations, corporations, and individuals joining the metaverse grows, the US Air Force has decided to build its own metaverse. According to a tweet sent out on April 19 by non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and metaverse trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis, the United States Air Force (USAF) has submitted a trademark application for a “secure digital metaverse” called SPACEVERSE.
The SPACEVERSE is described as “a secure digital metaverse that converges terrestrial and space physical and digital realities and provides synthetic and simulated extended-reality (XR) training, testing, and operations environments” in an application filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on April 14, 2022.
It’s worth noting that the number of metaverses and NFT-related trademark submissions to the USPTO increased 421-fold in 2021 alone, a huge increase compared to only three in 2020, and the trend is expected to continue well into 2022.
Mastercard International filed up to fifteen new trademark applications two weeks before the USAF filing to register Mastercard, its “Circles” emblem, and the “Priceless” slogan. It revealed the global payment facilitator’s plans for NFT-backed media, digital goods marketplaces, e-commerce transactions, and payment processing in the metaverse.
