Andreessen Horowitz has announced the launch of a16z crypto research, a new multidisciplinary lab that will work closely with the firm’s investment portfolio to solve some of the crypto space’s most urgent problems. It modeled after OpenAI and Alphabet’s DeepMind research centers. Its head of research is Tim Roughgarden, a professor at Columbia and Stanford who has written extensively on Web3.
Dan Boneh, a professor at Stanford, is being promoted to senior research adviser and four others are joining as research partners: Joseph Bonneau, who’s written extensively on cryptocurrency; Benedikt Bünz, a Stanford Ph.D. student and chief scientist at Espresso Systems; Scott Kominers, a Harvard Business School professor; and Valeria Nikolaenko, a former research scientist for Novi at Meta.
“Usually whenever there’s a new groundbreaking technology that has general purpose and can be used for all sorts of different things, there’s an opportunity for an industrial research lab to bridge the world of academia with the world of industry practice,” said Ali Yahya, a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz who previously worked at Google on Google Brain.
This lab will concentrate on utilizing new technologies such as Web 3.
“In the last decade, the world of crypto and web3 has likewise emerged as a new frontier in technology, and it has matured into an independent field of knowledge that brings together elements of computer science, economics, finance, and the humanities,” the press release reads.
Decentralized finance (DeFi), open-source code running on blockchains (DAOs), and NFTs have all seen significant growth in this decade, according to the VC giant.
A16z believes that there is a significant possibility for an industrial lab to bridge academic theory with industry practice in the field. The multidisciplinary lab will aid in the development of Web 3.0 and crypto as a formal subject of study, drawing the greatest talent from a variety of disciplines.
