The newest NBA NFT collection “The Association”, which was minted on April 20, had been reported that existed security vulnerabilities in its smart contract. The earliest members of the NBA’s Discord server were told that they will receive exclusive NFTs from the collection, however, many wallets which are on the Allow List are “not able to mint an NFT”.
In an announcement after the exploit, the official Twitter account of the collection has stated that they will airdrop to each Allow List wallet an The Association NFT. At the same time, they will increase the size of the collection from 18,000 to 30,000 NFTs. “With that, each of the 240 players in the 2022 NBA Playoffs will have 125 editions (previously 75),” the league confirmed.
These Association NFTs attributes will vary during the playoffs based on each player’s real-life performance, thus a particular number of dunks, blocks, three-pointers, rebounds, or assists will alter a player’s picture. The player’s team’s performance will also affect the background and “frames” of the NFT.
The collection launch announcement came only a few days after the NBA opened a Discord server (with almost 50,000 users) and a new Twitter account dedicated to anything “NBA x NFT.” Some speculated that the NBA had submitted a trademark registration for “The Association” branding earlier this month.
While the overall NFT industry is declining, interest in sports NFTs has remained strong. Swoops, the NFT basketball game backed by Gary Vaynerchuk, announced a $3.5 million investment round last week to help grow out its fantasy sports title on Polygon.
