On Friday, the US Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) placed bitcoin mixing service platform, Blender.io, to its sanction list. North Korea allegedly exploited the service, which allows anyone to obscure the record kept by the blockchain, to help its destructive cyber activities and financial fraud of stolen cryptocurrency, according to the department.
The agency’s Secretary of the Terrorism Unit said in a statement that this is the first time the agency has gone after a crypto mixing platform in its history. According to him, the nation is still exploring for ways to apprehend the perpetrators. He also stated that the organization will not permit them, as well as the platforms that assisted them, to operate without complying with the law.
According to the current sanctions, any Blender.io property owned in the United States or by Americans would be prohibited. If either of the barred persons owns over 50% of a company, that company will be blocked as well. The penalties also ban U.S. citizens from transacting with the prohibited individuals. In October 2021, the Treasury issued a 28-page paper on sanctions compliance instructions for the cryptocurrency industry.
North Korea did not take America’s threats lightly. Park Song Il, a North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs official, said in a statement on Saturday that the US was acting innocent for a crime that originated in the country and used its IT supremacy to put the squeeze on nations with whom it disagreed.
Song dismissed a combined advisory issued by the Treasury, Homeland Security, and FBI, as well as a ludicrous claim that the DPRK is using its cyber activities to fund illicit atomic weapons and nuclear missile development.
Song also accused the United States of committing more serious cybercrimes than the ones it is waging war on. He said that the United States startled the entire world by listening in on the phone conversations of its allies, let alone its adversaries. It was once again the United States that carried out over 61,000 hacking activities under the “PRISM” internet monitoring program. He went on to say that they absolutely reject the US’s bogus cyber threat and regard it as a significant violation on our state’s sovereignty.
