According to a Bloomberg News article, some of the largest cryptocurrency startups, including Coinbase, Chainalysis, and Binance, are actively hiring law enforcement officers, giving them double and triple their present wages to leave their employment.
According to the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), they are losing “experienced cybercrime officers” and employees at a pace three to four times that of the rest of the policing force. The Council represents all forces in the United Kingdom.
According to the NPCC, 15 former policing or law enforcement officials now work for important crypto enterprises, and that figure is expected to “grow dramatically” in the coming year.
Andrew Gould, head of the NPCC’s cybercrime unit, told Bloomberg:
“The loss of experienced cyber officers and staff is a significant problem for us. Their skills are in high demand in the private sector so we can see them doubling or tripling their pay which is why they go.”
In 2018, police chiefs in the United Kingdom urged the government for funding to train 250 “crypto tactical advisers” in the investigation and seizure of digital assets. The counselors are now in high demand from crypto companies and exchanges, which are constantly under attack from hackers and shifting global rules.
According to a Coinbase representative, former cybercrime officers can play a “integral role” in keeping customers’ assets safe and secure.
However, the survey stated that the poaching of highly skilled cybercrime talent is having an impact on the United Kingdom. According to Gould, the country “can’t afford to lose such highly skilled employees at this rate.”
