STEPN’s new Anti-Cheat is flagging users as bots
STEPN has recently released an update to supplement the CHEAT mechanism to combat forms of fraud.
The project recently announced that it would stop providing GPS services in China at the request of government agencies in the country. Unfortunately, some users have been identified as bots through the new system due to a DDOS attack on the server. The official STEPN account has informed:
“We sincerely apologize to all the users who have been identified as bots. The moment this issue came to our knowledge, we started work on it immediately… due to a 25 million DDOS attack sent to the server within a short period. Due to network congestion, AI cannot receive useful information and identify them as bots.”
The application is reportedly back online as “data transfers have reopened and… also improved the rules and formulated processing and identification rules.” The report also stressed the need for an anti-cheating update.
“The anti-cheating update may seem small, but it is an important cornerstone of STEPN long-term development.”
The main issue that Plays to Earn (P2E) projects are concerned with is whether their project is sustainable in the face of market volatility. Reducing the number of fraudsters is part of their efforts to ensure the sustainability of projects.
STEPN’s users earn tokens such as GST by walking, jogging, or running while using the app. The game is unlikely to succeed if players can generate many tokens through bots and GPS spoofing. The limit is placed on the number of tokens earned in a given period.
Moreover, using bots to earn tokens in STEPN will deprive the concept of “Move to Earn.” The game will be able to detect the difference between bots and authentic players, which is what the new update tries to achieve.
