After successfully hacking 20 million Optimism (OP) tokens, the hacker promised to return them, but he only transferred 17 million tokens.
According to data from Etherscan, there have been 17 Optimism token transfers in the amount of 1 million per transfer, starting at 12:09 PM UTC, with the last transaction taking place at 12: 31 PM UTC on Friday.
Currently, this hacker still has 1 million tokens in his wallet. The attacker previously sent 1 million coins to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and sold another 1 million shortly after the hack.
This hacker has fulfilled the previous promise when returning the stolen tokens, although there are still 3 million missing tokens. This odd behavior makes it very difficult for many people to understand the intentions of this hacker. Many people also say that he is a “kindly hacker”.
Wintermute initially gave the hacker a week to return the money while promising not to use any legal action.
Hackers can access the funds because Wintermute provided an undeployed multi-signature wallet to Optimism to receive a 20 million OP token grant from the latter.
