What is the project trying to achieve?
Illuvium is an open-world fantasy battle game built on the Ethereum blockchain. Often touted as the first AAA game on Ethereum, Illuvium wants to provide a source of entertainment to both casual gamers and hardcore DeFi fans through a range of collecting and trading features.
The game is a fusion between an open-world exploration game and a PVP battle game. Players can spend their time exploring the expanses of the game world or building up their team of powerful beasts.
What is the unique selling point?
Unlike most other blockchain-powered games, Illuvium features a fully 3D environment, with over 100 unique Illuvials found scattered throughout its various regions. Each Illuvial is designed by a team of world-class artists, ensuring it appeals to players accustomed to big-budget retail games.
Beyond this, it boasts a number of features that help it stand out from both other blockchain-enabled games and AAA titles. These include:
Although Illuvium is secured by Ethereum, it is built on Immutable X (IMX) — a layer-2 solution that is designed to help scale applications with NFT functionality. By leveraging Immutable X’s capabilities, Illuvium ensures players can mint and trade their NFTs with zero gas fees and practically instant transaction finality. Players always maintain custody of their assets while using IMX.
Illuvium features a built-in decentralized exchange (DEX) platform appropriately named the IlluviDEX. This can be used for trustlessly exchanging Illuvium assets, including Illuvial NFTs. A 5% fee is deducted from each sale and funnelled into the rewards pool for ILV stakers.
A total of 3 million ILV — equivalent to 30% of the maximum supply (10 million) — are allocated to the Illuvium yield farming program. These will be distributed over a period of three years to users contributing liquidity and through various partner reward schemes. Illuvium features a unique yield farming reward system, in that all ILV rewards earned through the yield farm are locked for a period of one year before they can be withdrawn.
However, stakers have the option to skip the unlock timer by converting their ILV rewards to a secondary in-game only asset known as sILV. By claiming their rewards as sILV, users receive the USD equivalent of sILV, and can spend their rewards early to purchase in-game items. SILV cannot be withdrawn from the game and is not represented by a blockchain-based asset.
How To Play Illuvium?
Like any role-playing game, players must customize their character to their liking. From there, it’s time to head out into the world and begin exploring. Then select your Polymorphic Subordinate Drone. Once you and your sidekick are ready, you can then head out to explore the various regions of the world and the mysteries that shattered it.
As you adventure, you will encounter Illuvials that you can fight. If you subdue them, use a Shard to snap them up so they are yours permanently. For players just starting out, you will be able to mine free shards that are only capable of capturing a select few Illuvials that are far less powerful than some. But you will be able to get started in the game without any expense and learn the mechanics.
There are many regions to explore, but most will be inaccessible to the first generation of players. Over time, players will unlock Obelisks which allow for travel to new beautiful, challenging, and important regions that come with new Illuvials to battle and collect, and shed more light on the enigma that happened here.
There are over 100 Illuvials to find around the open world that belong to different classes with different affinities. Because of this, some Illuvials match well together during battle while others may not. The variation also depends on the opponents’ Illuvials, making for interesting situations and matchups.
Illuvials are grouped into one of 5 classes: Fighter, Guardian, Rogue, Psion and Empath. As in many RPGs, the choices you make regarding the class of your Illuvials will affect the outcome of your battles with wild Illuvials. Draft a team ideally synergistic in qualities and traits that can work well together as a single fighting unit. Ascended forms are so powerful that sometimes they embody two classes simultaneously, such as Slayer (Fighter + Rogue), or become stronger in a single class such as Invoker (Psion + Psion).
More powerful Illuvials can have affinities to two elements at a time, allowing for various combinations. Illuvials can even stack the same affinity twice, letting the Illuvial become stronger within that one affinity. For example, air and water can be combined to create a frost Illuvial while two fire affinities can be stacked to create an inferno Illuvium.
The combinations of classes and affinities are hugely important when battling. Should a player choose an overgrowth Illuvial (nature + nature) against an inferno Illuvial (fire + fire), they will likely have a rough experience.
While the NFT representation of Illuvials is stored in crypto wallets, in-game Illuvials are stored in items called shards. You could think of shards as Poké Balls in Pokémon. Just as Illuvials vary in power, shards vary in strength. More powerful Illuvials require stronger shards. Combat experience lets Illuvials grow stronger, increase their powers and level up.
One core aspect of the game is the fusing of Illuvials to make them more powerful. Collecting three fully-leveled Illuvials lets players merge, or “fuse,” them into a single, more powerful Illuvial. More powerful Illuvials are better in combat and worth more ILV, the native token in the game. Those looking to make money playing Illuvium will likely need to focus on finding matching Illuvials, training them to their highest level, fusing them, and then selling them for higher values.
Once players have captured Illuvials and would like to battle, they may enter a matchmaking queue in the Ranked Arena. They may also call out individual players and challenge them to a battle in the Leviathan Arena where spectators can bet on their match.
It’s important to note that Illuvium is an auto-battler. This means that both players must choose their Illuvials, weapons and armor before the match. Players do not manually choose attacks or have the ability to alter the outcome once the battle has started as is with other similarly styled games like Pokémon.
Weapons & Armor
In Illuvium, it is not just the Illuvials that fight. You as the player character get to fight in the battle, wielding futuristic weapons that can be equipped with gemstones that store the essence of Illuvials, allowing you to emit an aura that boosts your Illuvials in combat. Your choice of weapons also determines your class, which gives additional benefits to your team. Weapons can be sold on the IlluviDEX like most other NFTs in the game.
Also forged from items mined on Illuvium, armour is your defence against the beasts that you fight. If your armour becomes too damaged you may need to wait until it regenerates. However, your choice of armour can sway the battle, as each suite has different properties. Choosing the right one for you and your team is one of the many decisions you will make in the game. Armor can be sold on the IlluviDEX like most other NFTs in the game.
Free-to-play & Paid Version
Players begin Illuvium with a free-to-play experience in the Tier 0 regions of the world. These areas will help them learn the game and understand its mechanics. While Illuvium describes this as a “non-abridged” version, players will need to opt-in to the paid version to collect NFTs from higher-tiered regions.
How to stake Illuvium?
Holders of the ILV token are able to stake their tokens to earn rewards from the network. 100% of in-game revenues are given to ILV token holders that are staking their coins to the network. As mentioned, ILV is subject to a 12-month lock-up period whereas sILV can be claimed at any time for use in the game.
Staking ILV will require a compatible Ethereum wallet. One of the most commonly used ethereum wallets in the DeFi space is the MetaMask wallet browser extension as it allows users to easily connect to various DeFi platforms. Those seeking to stake their ILV will simply need to send their tokens to a MetaMask or MetaMask equivalent wallet and then head over to Illuvium’s staking site and connect the wallet with their ILV tokens.
