Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS)
Overview
Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) is a highly efficient consensus algorithm developed by Dan Larimer in 2014. It operates as a digital democracy, where token holders use their balances to cast votes for a select group of delegates, often called witnesses or block producers, who are entrusted with securing the network.
How It Works
Unlike traditional Proof of Stake (PoS) where any validator can participate, DPoS limits block creation to a fixed number of elected nodes (typically 21 to 101). These delegates take turns proposing and validating blocks. Token holders can delegate their voting power to representative nodes, receiving a portion of block rewards in return.
Advantages and Trade-offs
DPoS offers exceptionally high transaction throughput, low latency, and minimal energy consumption compared to Proof of Work. However, by concentrating block production among a small group of nodes, the system trades off absolute decentralization and is potentially more susceptible to collusion or censorship.
