An Initial Coin Offering (ICO) is a capital-raising mechanism used by blockchain startups to fund the development of new cryptocurrencies, applications, or decentralized services. Similar to an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in traditional stock markets, an ICO allows a company or project team to issue digital tokens to early backers in exchange for capital.
How an ICO Works
- Structure and Tokenomics: Project organizers establish how the token will function, total token supply, and sale terms.
- White Paper: The team publishes a comprehensive pitch document detailing the technical specifications, project goals, team qualifications, and utility of the token.
- Capital Collection: Investors purchase newly issued tokens using fiat money or popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH).
- Project Execution: If the funding target is met, collected funds are used to build out the project. If the minimum threshold is missed, funds are typically returned.
