Verdict

Base App earns its 7.5 as a well-resourced, genuinely non-custodial multichain wallet with the easiest onboarding in the category and a feature set no other major wallet matches. The credit side is long: correct self-custody with the keys on your device, seed or passkey recovery, eleven natively supported networks plus Bitcoin, protective tooling that previews and screens transactions, a public US parent company, and a free app with no KYC for self-custody use. The debit side is specific. The consumer app is closed source, so the trust rests on Coinbase's reputation rather than inspectable code. The parent company's May 2025 breach, while it never touched wallet keys, armed scammers with real customer data that gets used against self-custody holders. And the product's multiple setup paths leave too many users unsure which recovery model protects their funds. For a Coinbase user stepping into self-custody, or anyone curious what a social super-app wallet looks like, it is an easy recommendation. For maximum-trust storage, pair it with a Ledger through the extension or choose an open-source wallet.

Pros
  • Non-custodial, Coinbase never holds your keys
  • Passkey smart wallet skips seed-phrase handling
  • Ethereum, Base, Solana, and major EVM chains
  • Backed by Nasdaq-listed Coinbase Global
  • Farcaster feed, mini-apps, encrypted chat
Cons
  • Consumer app is closed source
  • Parent's 2025 breach fuels impersonation scams
  • Multiple setup paths confuse new users
  • Swap covers fewer networks than storage
  • DOGE and LTC absent from the new Base mode
