Is Tangem safe?

For its intended threat model, yes. Keys are generated and stored in an EAL6+ Samsung secure element, never leave the card, and the stack has passed audits by Kudelski Security, Riscure, and Cure53 without critical findings. The two real limits are the lack of an on-device screen, which means a compromised phone could display a false destination address, and a physical laser attack disclosed in July 2026 that cannot be patched.

Has Tangem been hacked?

No user funds are known to have been stolen through the hardware. In July 2026, Ledger’s Donjon lab demonstrated a laser fault-injection attack that resets a card’s access code and allows an attacker to sign transactions. It requires physical possession of the card, around $250,000 in equipment, and hours of lab work per card. Because Tangem firmware is immutable, the flaw can never be fixed, so Tangem’s own “zero cards hacked” marketing line should be read as a vendor claim, not a guarantee.

What happens if I lose my Tangem cards?

Lose one card from a set and you restore access with a remaining backup card. Lose every card in a seedless set and the funds are permanently unrecoverable. You also cannot add a new backup card after initial setup, so choose the two-card or three-card pack deliberately and store the cards in separate places.

Does Tangem have a seed phrase?

Not by default. The standard setup clones keys across two or three cards with no phrase involved. Since the 2.0 generation you can optionally generate or import a 12/24-word seed phrase, shown once during setup, if you prefer the traditional recovery model.

Partly. The mobile app and SDK are open source on GitHub. The card firmware is closed-source and cannot be independently inspected, so you rely on the published third-party audits for assurance about what the chip actually runs.

Is Tangem better than Ledger?

They optimize for different things. Tangem wins on price, simplicity, and seedless backup, at $54.90 versus $79 to $249. Ledger devices add an on-device screen that verifies transaction details independently of your phone and firmware that can be updated when vulnerabilities appear, both of which Tangem lacks by design. For larger balances, the screen is the deciding difference.

Does Tangem require KYC?

Accepted Answer

No. The wallet needs no account or identity verification to buy or use. Only Tangem Pay, the optional Visa payment layer, requires KYC.
