Three types of crypto phones have been launched by crypto and technology companies respectively: Solana, Polygon, and HTC. Made the latest wave of Web3 smartphone projects in the last few years.
In the past, the history of the crypto industry has seen two units that have produced blockchain smartphones, SIRIN LABS and HTC Exodus. At the end of 2018, Sirin Labs’ Blockchain FINNEY smartphone was launched in Spain. FINNEY was created to solve the problems that crypto fans often face, especially safety and security.
Meanwhile, HTC Exodus is a blockchain smartphone that has cooperated with Opera, Brave and Binance browsers, has built-in Binance Chain and supports DEX exchange in 2019. However, neither of these products received the approval wide attention and gradually fell into oblivion.
Recently, the creation of crypto phones is a way for crypto and tech companies to access their latest mobile Web3 projects.
Recently, Solana made a big splash when it successfully launched the Solana Mobile Stack (SMS) software ecosystem for Android, along with the appearance of a smartphone called “Saga” that will ship in early 2023.
SMS is software designed to make Web3 functionality more accessible via mobile phones, allowing smoother access to wallet apps, improving Solana Pay usage on the go and accessing into games, apps and the NFT marketplace.
Solana Labs will release its own Android smartphone called Saga early next year. This is the main product of Solana Labs in the near future. The smartphone is packed with top-of-the-line specs including a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, a 6.67-inch OLED display, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. Saga will have a security hardware module to integrate Seed Vault and protect users’ personal information from exploits and attacks. The phone is expected to retail for around $1,000.
SMS isn’t designed specifically for Saga, but Android phone makers like Samsung and Google will need to actively adopt the software to enable the same kind of functionality on their devices.
Ethereum scaling platform Polygon revealed its own push into mobile in partnership with Nothing, a new smartphone tech startup. Rather than create its own branded phone, Polygon will work with the brand to implement its technology within the upcoming Nothing Phone (1).
Full details have yet to be revealed ahead of the phone’s July 12 launch event, but Polygon has said that it will enable easier access to dApps and games via the platform, enable easier payments and cryptographically-secured identification features and more.
The Nothing Phone (1) is an Android smartphone that’s likely to cost a lot less than the Solana Saga, due to the use of a mid-range processor instead of a flagship chip. Nothing was founded by Carl Pei, who previously co-founded smartphone brand OnePlus, which is known for phones with flagship allure but smart skimps and tweaks to deliver more competitive prices.
As mentioned, HTC Desire 22 Pro is a smartphone with integrated Metaverse technology, pre-installed Viverse application to guide users into the metaverse world through Vive Flow glasses. In addition, Viverse also allows owners to participate in NFT transactions and create their own virtual reality space.
This might not be an ideal phone for lavish 3D experiences, but it is being designed as a handset that you can use to buy and store NFT assets on Ethereum and Polygon. We’ll see whether this smartphone finds a wider audience than HTC’s previous crypto phones. It’s releasing in Taiwan and the U.K., but it’s unclear whether a global launch will follow.
