Worldcoin Makes A New Breakthrough In Identity Authentication With World ID

Key Points:

  • Via the World ID open protocol, Worldcoin attempts to solve this in a privacy-first, self-sovereign, and decentralized manner.
  • World ID incorporates phone number verification for quick access to anybody with a smartphone, as well as Orb biometric verification for great precision.
Worldcoin, an open-source protocol co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has launched World ID, its new decentralized identification system, and the SDK that will enable developers to incorporate the protocol into their platforms.

According to Worldcoin, the growth of AI and generative software has made the question of online identification even more difficult.

World ID, which is powered by zero-knowledge encryption, gives evidence of personhood and considers itself a worldwide digital passport that resides locally on the phone of its possessor.

The recently released World ID, described in a statement as the fundamental identification protocol underpinning Worldcoin and backed by zero-knowledge encryption, is a mobile tool that users can use to authenticate their identity without losing anonymity.

World ID promises to offer seamless sign-in to websites, mobile applications, and crypto dApps without requiring personal information such as names and email addresses. As of now, the decentralized identification protocol offers a phone number and iris verifications as the primary credential.

The Orb, an open iris imaging device created by the tech firm Tools For Humanity (TFH), supports the latter, the creator of the Worldcoin initiative. TFH presently advises the Worldcoin Foundation and operates the World App.

It is the primary mechanism for users to be verified. They can, however, employ methods like phone number verification, although with less precision.

The Worldcoin project seeks to provide the namesake universal basic income (UBI) cryptocurrency to all persons worldwide who agree to have their iris scanned in order to build the world’s biggest financial and identification system.

Worldcoin is increasing Orb distribution via an operator program that rewards businesses for scanning customers. According to the release, there are presently 1.3 million sign-ups.

While Worldcoin is currently in Beta, Orb is only available in Argentina, Chile, India, Kenya, Portugal, and Spain, as well as at blockchain and identity conferences.
