What is Hashrate?
Hashrate (or hash rate) measures the computational speed and processing power at which a blockchain network or individual mining machine generates hashes per second. In Proof-of-Work (PoW) cryptocurrencies, transaction data is passed through a cryptographic hashing algorithm (like SHA-256) to convert arbitrary input into a fixed-length hexadecimal output.
Measurement Units
Hashrates reflect how many hashing operations can be executed in one second. As networks grow, these values scale using standard metric prefixes:
- Kilohash (KH/s): 1,000 hashes per second
- Megahash (MH/s): 1,000,000 hashes per second
- Gigahash (GH/s): 1,000,000,000 hashes per second
- Terahash (TH/s): 1,000,000,000,000 hashes per second

Individual vs. Total Network Hashrate
Each machine or computer participating in the network contributes its own individual hashrate based on its hardware specs (e.g., ASICs or GPUs) and algorithm efficiency. Summing the individual hash rates of all active participants yields the total network hashrate, which is a vital indicator of a blockchain's overall computational strength and security against potential attacks.
