Regulatory Framework

Trading & ownership
Sri Lanka does not have a clear legal framework for crypto. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has issued multiple warnings (2018, 2022) discouraging the public from using cryptocurrencies. The CBSL stated that crypto is not legal tender. However, no formal legal prohibition has been enacted and crypto is not explicitly illegal. Given Sri Lanka's severe economic crisis of 2022, interest in crypto as an alternative store of value increased.
