Samsung is in the process of producing 3nm chips
South Korean tech giant Samsung has started producing chips using its latest 3-nanometer (nm) technology, the company said on Jun 30. The new chips can be used for Bitcoin mining hardware.
South Korea’s largest company will begin with 3nm semiconductors for high-performance and specialized low-power computing applications before expanding to mobile processors, it said in a statement on Thursday. By applying so-called Gate-All-Around transistor architecture, Samsung’s 3nm products reduce power consumption by up to 45% and improve performance by 23% compared to 5nm chips, it said.
One of the earliest clients for Samsung’s 3nm chips could be a Chinese chip firm specializing in Bitcoin mining, according to local media The Elec.
“We will continue active innovation in competitive technology development and build processes that help expedite achieving maturity of technology,”
said Siyoung Choi, president and head of Samsung’s foundry business.
Taiwan’s already dominant share of contract chipmaking revenues is set to grow this year.
The 3nm chip is expected to be mass-produced by the end of this year.
