FIFA Launches NFT Platform On Algorand During World Cup

FIFA, the global governing body of soccer, is launching a new NFT collectibles platform with the highly anticipated World Cup just around the corner. The new platform will be launched on Algorand, continuing an existing partnership between the two parties.

The world’s governing body of soccer, has announced it will introduce an NFT platform for digital collectibles with soccer themes in the months leading up to the 2022 World Cup.

The platform will be called “FIFA+ Collect” and will appear to take a Top Shot-esque approach, with a bit of a twist. Top Shot, of course, has utilized IP from the NBA, NFL and UFC to take in-game moments and mint them as NFTs. FIFA will also seemingly leverage big in-game moments, and pair them alongside “art and imagery,” according to the press release

According to the source, the platform would focus on being “affordable, inclusive and accessible to all football fans,” when it launches later in September.

FIFA+ Collect will run on the Algorand blockchain, a proof-of-stake Ethereum and Solana alternative developed by MIT professor Silvio Micali. In May, Algorand became FIFA’s official blockchain partner.

“This exciting announcement makes FIFA collectibles available to any football fan, democratising the ability to own a part of the FIFA World Cup. Just like sports memorabilia and stickers, this is an accessible opportunity for fans around the world to engage with their favourite players, moments and more on new platforms.”

FIFA Chief Business Officer Romy Gai stated

Algorand gained attention earlier this year when it bought the digital music sharing service Napster and teamed up with LimeWire, which was once its own peer-to-peer music service and recently debuted a music-focused NFT marketplace showcasing the works of artists signed to Universal Music Group’s label.
