The Sandbox has announced that HSBC, a British multinational bank, is creating a virtual stadium and releasing rugby quests on the metaverse platform in advance of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens Rugby Tournament, which is part of the annual World Rugby Sevens Series competition.

The virtual event will run from October 24 to November 14, providing participants with six rugby missions to accomplish in various locations around the stadium. These missions will include mini-games, instructional questions about rugby, and varied obstacles.

The competition is co-sponsored by Cathay Pacific Airways and HSBC, and it will take place from November 4 to November 6.

Notably, The Sandbox by Animoca Brands and HSBC began working together in March of this year. HSBC’s Hong Kong division purchased virtual real estate in March in order to develop future sports and gaming experiences. The current HSBC rugby game has been in the works since then.

Luanne Lim, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Hong Kong, said:

“At HSBC, we see great potential to create innovative experiences through emerging technologies for our customers and the communities we serve. We also believe in the unifying power of sports and have been a proud sponsor of the Hong Kong Sevens for decades.

Our groundbreaking first foray into The Sandbox remarkably ties together these themes, utilising the gaming, entertainment and educational aspects of emerging technologies to elevate our support towards rugby. Through the metaverse, we are delighted to bring rugby to our communities within the pitch and beyond.”

HSBC’s groundbreaking first foray into The Sandbox mixes decentralization and Web3 by harnessing new technologies’ gaming, entertainment, and instructional aspects to strengthen their support for rugby. HSBC is thrilled to provide rugby to digital communities throughout the world via the Metaverse, both on and off the field.
