zkSync suffered a barrage of criticism in the run-up to the much-hyped Baby Alpha debut from doubters and competitors leery of its bold technological promises.
Matter Labs’ marketing, in particular, has come under fire for positioning the zkSync v2 platform as the first of its sort to launch on Ethereum’s mainnet, beating off fast-approaching competitors Polygon and Scroll.
Though the platform will be live on Ethereum’s main network, its functionalities will be severely constrained for the time being. According to Matter Labs’ official roadmap, the Baby Alpha launch will not be available to other projects but will instead be used to run zkSync’s systems through a series of real-money stress tests that will help them ensure the production system is running correctly and performing as intended.
According to the roadmap, a Fair Launch accessible to outside teams will take place in the next months.
zkSync’s v2 network will be severely limited for the time being, but it is the first of three anticipated zkEVM projects to launch on Ethereum’s mainnet.
All of the projects aspire to be compatible with any Ethereum smart contract and to offer significant security and efficiency gains over the network’s existing scaling methods.
