Optimism’s Goerli Testnet To Migrate To Bedrock In January

Key Points:

  • OP Labs announced that Optimism’s Goerli testnet would migrate to Bedrock on January 12.
  • The team is working with node operators to ensure a smooth migration, while users and apps won’t be impacted by the migration.
  • After the migration of Optimism Goerli, OP Labs will submit a proposal regarding Optimism mainnet migration.
On January 12, the Goerli testnet for Optimism will transition to Bedrock, according to OP Labs.

Users and apps won’t be harmed by the transfer, which OP Labs is coordinating with node operators like Alchemy, Ankr, Chainlink, Etherscan, Infura, Quicknode, and Tenderly to make seamless.

In order to reuse as much of Ethereum’s technology, infrastructure, and design patterns as feasible, OP Labs created Bedrock, a new generation of decentralized Rollup architecture. It will make it possible for Optimism to lower prices, incorporate a variety of proof techniques, such as ZK proofs, and serve several execution clients.

The use of the SDK or re-implementation of this functionality will be required for anyone who performs automated deposits and withdrawals outside of the gateway. More specifically, the gateways users utilize must enable two-step withdrawals and offer a gas buffer for deposits.

An upgrade request for the mainnet will be made to the Token House following a successful migration to the Testnet. If the idea is approved, the mainnet of Optimism could switch to Bedrock in Q1.

The most-forked L2 code base, which is the EVM counterpart, will be even better with the Bedrock upgrade. Optimism will be able to:

  • Offer the lowest possible L1 data fees. No other rollups have figured out how to get these fees lower.
  • Future-proof its proof schemes. Optimism will be able to incorporate multiple proof mechanisms including ZK proofs–no need to wait for a ZK breakthrough to deploy on Optimism. When ZK technology is ready, users will be able to use it for your project.
  • Support multiple execution clients, allowing for client diversity & client-specific benefits.
  • Implement two-step withdrawals for bridged assets. Users will be able to monitor for bad behavior themselves, making withdrawing bridged assets much more secure.

Optimism previously announced the migration of its testnet to bedrock, but the event took place later than expected.
