“Twitter Killer” Damus Reaches Top 10 Social Network Apps On App Store

Key Points:

  • The Apple App Store has given its approval to Damus, a purported “Twitter killer” that is constructed on a decentralized network.
  • The app is a messaging service built on Nostr, a decentralized network that, among other things, allows for encrypted end-to-end private communications.
The Apple App Store now offers Damus, an alternative to Twitter.

Its rumored “Twitter killer” promises to give a social network that is impervious to censorship with user-controlled end-to-end private chat. The decentralized networking protocol Nostr serves as its foundation.

After former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey expressed his strong support for its use case, Nostr gained popularity in December, especially among Bitcoin fans. Later, he sent fiatjaf, the inventor of Nostr, 14 BTC (more than $300,000) for the project’s continuous development.

Jack Dorsey announced the information shortly after, calling it a “milestone” event for open-source protocols:

Nostr wants to develop into an unfiltered social media site. According to a post from Protos on January 27, it also supports built-in payments using the Bitcoin layer-2 Lightning Network.

Damus has also incorporated a Layer 2 Lighting Network widget to accept Bitcoin payments and tips directly on the platform, making it compatible with other open protocols.

Damus swiftly reached its 10,000-user cap during beta testing, but earlier this month, it encountered some early denials from the major tech company before ultimately receiving permission. With Damus now available on the Apple App Store, a far wider audience may now access Nostr in a more comfortable and familiar manner than with other web clients.

According to the team’s GitHub website, the code for the Damus web app has been contributed to by 44 distinct software engineers.

Other well-known people have also tried out the Damus app. Among them are U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis, a supporter of cryptocurrencies, former U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden, and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.

Although only recently launched on the Apple App Store, the platform has quickly occupied a position in the top 10 most popular social networking applications downloaded by users.
