Anatoly Yakovenko, Solana’s co-founder and CEO, announced the introduction of Saga, a web3-focused Android smartphone, some ten months ago. The phone is currently being released, and we were able to test one ahead of time.

Solana claims that Saga was created to make crypto goods and services more accessible to customers by providing them through phone rather than the typical method of accessing crypto platforms and apps, which is via computers.

Solana Mobile’s new gadget costs $1,000 and is based on technology from Bay Area smartphone firm OSOM. It comes with 512 GB of storage, two interchangeable rear camera lenses, a 6.67-inch OLED display, and a fingerprint scanner. It will come pre-installed with the most recent Android operating system.

What distinguishes the Saga is the “Solana Mobile Stack” (SMS), a collection of proprietary add-ons that incorporate crypto functionality into the phone’s hardware and software. SMS includes built-in security mechanisms that allow it to transmit, receive, trade, and store cryptocurrency on the device.

The Saga, unlike other Android smartphones, contains web3 functionality and a “Solana dApp Store” where you can discover software for web3 platforms.

This is when the Solana Saga comes into play. A Solana app store coexists with native Android applications. The mobile device is developed with two major technical components in mind: utility for a Web3 audience and security.

Saga has its own “dApp” store that solely displays cryptocurrency apps. Around a dozen programs spanning crypto trading, inter-wallet messaging, music, and digital collectibles are now available for download, with more on the way.

There are just a few apps in the store:

  • Wallets includes the Phantom, Solflare, Ledger, and Squads.
  • Marinade.finance, Jupiter, and Mango are three DeFi applications.
  • Nokiamon, Minty Fresh, and TIEXO are NFT applications.
  • Dialect, Audius Music, and urFeed are social applications.
  • In addition, the dApp workspace.

Strangely, Magic Eden does not appear on the list of dApp shops, despite the fact that the marketplace stated ambitions to collaborate with the SMS last year when Saga was introduced.

“I can’t remember the last time I went to anything but a phone…everything I do, I start with my phone, except for Web3,” Laver said in Saga Launch Event Livestream.

Google and Apple app shops have strict payment system requirements, and many Web3 applications must make sacrifices merely to get their app into their app stores. Uniswap’s much-anticipated software languished in the Apple app store for a month before being released to the public on Thursday.

Saga employs the Qualcomm secure execution environment to separate ownership of the wallet’s private keys from the core Android OS.

Users will be able to claim a Saga NFT token as soon as they set up their smartphone, and the first few users will get a Solana mobile welcome kit that includes cryptocurrency and sticker packs.

Yakovenko said last year that the phone is targeting the hardcore folks who know what self-custody entails. So this is a smartphone in the truest sense of the word for crypto enthusiasts.
