Do Kwon Can Be Tried And Go To Jail In Both Korea And America

Key Points:

  • South Korean prosecutor Do Kwon could spend the rest of his life raking in prison in both Korea and the US.
  • Kwon is expected to receive a record prison sentence in South Korea for financial fraud, with a sentence of more than 40 years.
  • Both countries are seeking to extradite Kwon after he was arrested in Montenegro.
According to Bloomberg News, Dan Sunghan, director of the Financial Crimes Investigation Department of the Southern District Prosecutor’s Office, South Korea, said in an interview that Do Kwon, co-founder of Terraform Labs, could spend the part spent most of his life in prison when he could be tried and convicted in both places, first in Korea, then in America.

“Do Kwon could be extradited to the US and appear in court there, then be executed in South Korea and the US; Kwon is expected to receive a record prison sentence in South Korea for financial fraud, with a sentence of more than 40 years,” Sunghan said. From what we understand, the extradition process could take up to nine months, depending on factors such as how long the suspect has been detained.”

Both countries are seeking to extradite Kwon on charges related to the collapse of the digital tokens he created, an explosion that blew away at least $40 billion. The 31-year-old was arrested in Montenegro in March, ending his time on the run.

Kwon was arrested in Montenegro on March 23 and charged there for using forged travel documents. US prosecutors also accuse him of participating in a years-long crypto scam, and he faces similar charges in South Korea. Both countries are seeking Kwon’s extradition from Montenegro. Kwon pleaded not guilty in Montenegro to using forged travel documents.

Previously, Terra’s founder had been denied bail by a court in Montenegro. Still, then the unexpected happened when the situation was reversed with the decision to agree to Do Kwon’s bail request for more than $400,000.

Because of this dizzying decision, many doubts are raised about Do Kwon’s political ties with Milojko Spajić, the former Minister of Finance of Montenegro and president of the political organization Europe Now.

The report said that Montenegro Prime Minister Dritan Abazović had received a handwritten letter from Do Kwon stating that he had sponsored Europe Now. Do Kwon and Milojko Spajić have known each other since 2018? The letter was forwarded to the prosecutor’s office, where Dritan Abazović called for an investigation into the relationship between the two men. But Milojko Spajić has denied the charges against him.
