Canadian Police Warn Of Crypto Robbery Spree Posing As Delivery People: Report

Key Points:

  • Canadian police issue warning about cryptocurrency-related robberies in Richmond and Delta.
  • Crypto Robbers posing as delivery people or officials gain access to victims’ homes and steal cryptocurrency information.
  • Police believe the incidents are connected and urge the public to report any similar incidents.
Gene Hsieh of the Richmond Royal Mounted Police in Canada said that the trend of crypto robberies is rising, and the suspects are entering the victim’s homes by posing as a deliveryman or government workers.

Canadian police have issued a warning to high-value cryptocurrency investors following a recent spate of robberies in which suspects posed as delivery people or officials to gain access to victims’ homes. The robbers then stole information that gave them access to the victims’ cryptocurrency accounts. The incidents have taken place in Richmond and Delta over the past year, with police responding to several reports.

According to Staff Sergeant Gene Hsieh of the Richmond RCMP Major Crime Unit, there appears to be a trend of robberies targeting victims’ cryptocurrency that is on the rise. Police have yet to confirm whether the incidents are linked, but a discernable pattern of operating, or modus operandi (M.O.), appears to be emerging. In each of the cases, the suspects gain access to a victim’s home by posing as delivery people or persons of authority. Once inside, the suspects rob the victims of information that gives them access to their cryptocurrency accounts.

Investigators with Richmond RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit and Delta Police are not releasing specific details on any of the incidents reported to date, nor are they speaking about the amounts of cryptocurrency involved, other than to say they are large amounts. The investigations are still ongoing.

Police have urged anyone who has experienced a similar robbery to come forward, as investigators believe there may be other victims out there who are hesitant to report such robberies to police.
