Worldcoin, the encryption project co-founded by Sam Altman, is set to undergo a substantial expansion of its eye-scanning identity platform, introducing the World ID 2.0 and forging partnerships with major technology companies.
The World ID 2.0, described as a “significant upgrade” by Tiago Sada, the product lead at Tools for Humanity (the company behind Worldcoin), will incorporate insights from the project’s white paper and feedback from developers. This enhancement includes a multi-level verification system designed to cater to users providing varying amounts of verification data.
Worldcoin plans to roll out on-site login ID services initially in Singapore and Mexico. Several prominent companies, including Shopify, Mercado Libre, Minecraft, Reddit, and Telegram, have committed to allowing users to log in using World ID. This integration is expected to streamline user verification processes, making it easier to distinguish between online bots and verified human users.
World ID 2.0 Elevates User Security with Enhanced Authentication Layers
The World ID 2.0 introduces “new verification levels,” offering flexibility for users who may choose different levels of verification data. The standard sphere-based World ID includes retina scanning, while a base-level World ID allows users to authenticate on their own devices without retina scanning, making it accessible to a broader audience.
At the other end of the spectrum is the Orb Plus, a more stringent verification level. Application manufacturers can implement this option to ensure Orb-authenticated users re-authenticate on their devices with each World ID login, providing an additional layer of security.
Tiago Sada emphasized that Sam Altman remains actively involved in crucial product and strategic decisions for Worldcoin, reinforcing the ongoing commitment to innovation and user-centric development within the project.
