Crypto Breaches Bring Major Losses in July
This comes as part of a concerning trend emerging across the cryptocurrency and blockchain space, which a bit more aggressively has been targeted by cyber attacks during the past period. In 2024 only, the industry lost more than $1.19 bln due to 149 hacks and scams—up 16.3% YoY, according to a recent report from Immunefi.
While July saw a marked decline in losses compared to the same time last year—14 incidents—losses rose dramatically by 90 per cent month-over-month.
The single largest loss this month came in the form of a $235 million hack on the WazirX exchange, allegedly executed by North Korean hackers. That breach has been at the center of controversy over the exchange’s response to the incident. The decentralized exchange aggregator LI.FI was also among the victims of hackers, losing $10 million.
