Telegram TON Blockchain Faces Second Outage Due to DOGS Surge

The Telegram TON blockchain had been down for over three hours and hadn’t produced new blocks. The reason for the outage is reportedly a large spike in usage due to a popular meme coin called Dogs.

Upon the shutdown, the development team behind TON reassured users that their assets were safe. A post shared on X read, “Appears to be due to heavy load attributed to DOGS token minting. TON Core is working on a solution.” Per Tonscan block explorer, the last blocks were signed at 16:23 UTC.

Its first outage fell within Asia trading hours and lasted about seven hours. This did little to dent the price of TON, however, as it was already depressed due to a spate of negative news stories, including the recent arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in France.

High Volume Transactions Disrupts Network Stability

DOGS, launched on Monday, is already ranked among the top 75 most popular cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. The new token launch was accompanied by an airdrop of it to 10 mln users of a Telegram-based app. This created immense hype and, consequently put much pressure on the network, congesting and eventually collapsing the blockchain late Tuesday.

The TON blockchain was back online on Thursday following disruptions. The cause of the disruption, according to the team, had been an abnormal spike in transaction load that interfered with the consensus mechanism of the network.

Although Telegram operates independently of TON, the cryptocurrency is still in favour among users. Telegram content creators can earn and transfer TON tokens on the platform.
