An aide to the Malaysian Prime Minister confirmed the breach, stating that the former leader had no involvement in the unauthorized post. The message, which falsely claimed the launch of Malaysia’s official cryptocurrency, “$MALAYSIA,” on the Solana blockchain, was part of a wider scam attempt.

Experts Warn of Rising Cryptocurrency Fraud on X Platform
Mahathir’s account is not the only recent victim. The official X account of the Cuban government was reportedly hijacked and used in a scam involving a Cuba-themed meme coin.
Additionally, actor Dean Norris, famous for his role in Breaking Bad, had his X account compromised. Hackers used it to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency called DEAN, which quickly amassed a market capitalization exceeding $8 million before being flagged as a scam.
