Ethereum Advances Pectra Testing with Hoodi Testnet Launch

Ethereum’s development team has launched the Hoodi testnet to finalize testing for the highly anticipated Pectra upgrade.

Hoodi is designed to address these challenges and simulate the Ethereum mainnet as accurately as possible.

Pectra Upgrade To Deploy on Hoodi Testnet Next Week

According to core developer Tim Beiko, the Pectra upgrade will be deployed on Hoodi testnet next Wednesday, marking a crucial step before its eventual rollout on the Ethereum mainnet.

The introduction of Hoodi follows issues encountered in previous Pectra tests on Ethereum’s Holesky and Sepolia testnets. These earlier attempts failed to finalize correctly due to configuration problems, prompting the need for a more reliable testing environment.

Christine Kim, Vice President of Research at Galaxy Digital, highlighted that the new testnet will incorporate a validator system similar to the mainnet. As part of this effort, at least 20 million test ETH will be distributed among 11 client groups and 5 staking operators.

Following the technological developments, ETH increased by more than 7.6% with a volume of $15.26 billion.

Key Enhancements in the Pectra Upgrade

Pectra represents a significant upgrade to Ethereum, combining elements from the Prague and Electra proposals. It includes over 10 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) intended to enhance wallet functionality and improve the overall user experience.

One of the key enhancements is an increase in the number of data blobs from three to six, which is expected to boost scalability and improve data availability across the network. Additionally, the Pectra upgrade will reduce the cost of Layer 2 data availability, increase staking limits, introduce account abstraction, and enhance smart contract capabilities.

Testing difficulties on the Holesky and Sepolia testnets have led to adjustments in Pectra’s deployment timeline. The upgrade was initially planned for an early spring 2025 launch on the Ethereum mainnet. However, after Pectra was deployed on Sepolia on March 5, developers encountered errors with geth nodes and empty block mining. These setbacks necessitated further refinement before moving forward.

Mainnet Deployment Timeline and Potential Delays

With Pectra set to go live on Hoodi testnet on March 26, Ethereum developers anticipate that if the testing proceeds smoothly, the upgrade could be implemented on the mainnet within approximately 30 days.

The developemnt places a potential launch date around late April or early May 2025. However, if the deployment extends beyond May 1, adjustments to Ethereum’s technical roadmap and “drop day” schedule may be necessary.

Meanwhile, crypto venture capital firm Paradigm has urged Ethereum’s core developers to accelerate protocol updates. The firm emphasized the importance of maintaining a competitive edge among Layer 1 blockchains by achieving milestones on Ethereum’s evolving technical roadmap.
