HEX is a blockchain certificate of deposit for Bitcoin holders that operates on the Ethereum network as an ERC-20 compliant token.

The History of HEX

HEX, previously known as Bitcoin Hex, is an ERC-20 compliant token on the Ethereum network that aims to be the first blockchain-based Certificate of Deposit protocol.

Hex was designed and launched by Richard Heart on 2 December 2019, with the goal of creating a blockchain-based Certificate of Deposit.

HEX is an ERC20 token that operates on the Ethereum network and serves as a store of value, replacing traditional Certificates of Deposit in the financial markets. It also takes advantage of the emerging DeFi ecosystem within the Ethereum network.

HEX utilizes the Ethereum network for transactions, including sending and receiving HEX tokens and interacting with the HEX smart contract. The consensus code and staking mechanism are contained within the HEX smart contract.

By staking HEX coins, users can earn a share of the new HEX coin issuance and participate in the inflation process. The HEX smart contract incentivizes behaviors that promote price appreciation and discourages actions that harm the price. Stakers are penalized for ending their stake early and rewarded for staking larger amounts of HEX for longer periods.

HEX is distributed to Bitcoin holders through a snapshot of the Bitcoin UTXO set taken on 2 December 2019 at block height 606227. The distribution ratio is 10,000 HEX per 1 BTC, and Bitcoin holders can only claim HEX during the first year of launch. Additionally, HEX can be obtained by exchanging ETH through interactions with the HEX smart contract.

After the first year of launch, any unclaimed HEX coins from Bitcoin holders are distributed to active HEX users with stakes. The maximum annual inflation rate for HEX is designed to be 3.69% after the first year.
