About Stacks
Discovering the World of Stacks (STX)
Stacks is a revolutionary blockchain solution that aims to bring the power of smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps) to Bitcoin (BTC). By building on top of the Bitcoin blockchain, Stacks ensures the same level of security and stability that has made Bitcoin so powerful. With Stacks, developers can unlock new possibilities and build open and modular DApps that were previously unimaginable.
At its core, Stacks leverages the widely used and highly secure Bitcoin blockchain for all its network activities.
Empowering the Stacks platform is the Stacks token (STX), which serves as the fuel for executing smart contracts, processing transactions, and registering new digital assets on the Stacks 2.0 blockchain.
In late 2020, the platform underwent a rebranding, transitioning from Blockstack to Stacks. This move aimed to distinguish the ecosystem and open-source project from Blockstack PBC, the original protocols' creator. The launch of the Stacks 2.0 mainnet followed in January 2021.
Exploring the Unique Features of Stacks
What sets Stacks apart is its ability to extend the functionality of Bitcoin without the need for forking or modifying the original Bitcoin blockchain. This is made possible thanks to Stacks' innovative proof-of-transfer (PoX) consensus mechanism, which directly connects with the Bitcoin blockchain. Miners pay in BTC to mint new Stacks (STX) tokens through this mechanism. Moreover, STX token holders have the opportunity to stack their tokens and earn Bitcoin rewards.
Another standout feature is Clarity, a cutting-edge smart contract programming language introduced by Stacks. Clarity boasts a secure and user-friendly design, thanks to its unambiguous syntax. Notably, this programming language is also utilized by the Algorand (ALGO) blockchain.
Additionally, Stacks made history as the first cryptocurrency to receive SEC qualification for a sale in the United States. In July 2019, it launched a $28 million Reg A+ sale cash offering for its STX tokens.
