Hong Kong University Now Opens The 1st Metaverse Virtual Campus

The first virtual reality campus has officially begun operations at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The university in Hong Kong promotes interactive learning in metaverse classrooms in an effort to create a MetaHKUST.

On September 1, HKUST will launch its Guangzhou campus with virtual hosting in a mixed reality environment.

“A lot of guests might be overseas and can’t attend [the opening], so we will host it in the metaverse,” says Pan Hui, chair professor of computational media & arts, HKUST Guangzhou campus.

The first step in creating the MetaHKUST is the introduction of the virtual reality program at HKUST. The two campuses will be linked by the MetaHKUST to create a collaborative learning space without boundaries.

“Guangzhou students can sit in the lecture room and see their classmates, but when they put on their goggles, they can see their Hong Kong peers sitting next to them. It’s a feeling of unity and participation,” says Hui.

In the digital classroom, students would be able to attend the same lectures on two campuses. Opening days, graduation, and the awarding of transcripts or diplomas as NFTs can all take place digitally.

Installations of VR classrooms, cameras, sensors, and visualization tools are part of the initial metaverse campus.

The metaverse is “here to stay,” according to Wang Yang, vice-president for institutional advancement at HKUST, despite the skepticism that comes with anything so new.

“Last year the buzzword was NFT. This year, it is the metaverse. It will become our reality in the future. We can imagine living in the metaverse soon,” added Yang.

“I think we should think ahead. As a university, we must be a leader of ideas, we should not wait for others to do something and follow suit. We should be pioneers,” says Yang.
