Andrew Tate, a social media influencer notorious for his sexist rhetoric, was detained in December and imprisoned in Romania as DIICOT investigated claims of human trafficking and sexual assault against him. Since March, he has been under house arrest.

After the December arrest, Romania’s anti-organized crime agency issued a statement stating that six victims of human trafficking had been discovered. It said they were subjected to acts of physical abuse and mental coercion, as well as sexual exploitation by members of the suspected criminal ring.

According to the report, the accused enticed victims with false promises of love before intimidating, monitoring, and subjecting them to various forms of control. They then reportedly pressured the victims into participating in pornographic actions for the criminal enterprise’s financial advantage. Tristan, his brother, and two acquaintances are also charged. The charges have been refuted by everybody. After a judgment by a Romanian court in March, they were transferred from detention to house arrest.

The accusation filed with the Bucharest court said that the four defendants created an organized criminal cell in 2021 to conduct human trafficking not only in Romania but also in other countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

According to Romanian legislation, a judge in the preliminary chamber of the court now has 60 days to check the case files for validity.

Tate was in the UK reality television program “Big Brother” in 2016 but was expelled when evidence of him assaulting a lady aired. He went to social media sites to disseminate his contentious views. He presently has 6.9 million Twitter followers.

He is said to have resided in Romania since 2017 and has already been banned from many social media networks for hate speech. He claims Romanian prosecutors have no proof and that their prosecution is a political attempt to silence him.

Due to an inaccuracy in interpreting the original Romanian, several auto-translation technologies, notably Google Translate, incorrectly stated that a significantly larger quantity worth $384 million had been confiscated.
