Changpeng Zhao, also known as CZ, is the founder and CEO of Binance, a cryptocurrency exchange. He has achieved billionaire status through his successful establishment and growth of Binance since 2017. Zhao holds residency in both China and Taiwan.

Born in Jiangsu, China, Zhao moved to Vancouver, British Columbia with his family in the late 1980s. His father, a former university professor in China, was exiled due to being labeled a “pro-bourgeois intellect.”

Zhao studied computer science at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. After graduating, he started working for the Tokyo Stock Exchange, where he developed software for matching trade orders. Later, he joined Bloomberg Tradebook as a futures trading software developer. In 2005, Zhao established Fusion Systems, a high-frequency trading platform for brokers, after relocating to Shanghai. He also contributed to various cryptocurrency projects, including Blockchain.info, and served as the CEO of OKCoin. In 2017, Zhao launched Binance after successfully raising $15 million through an initial coin offering (ICO).

In just 180 days of its launch, Binance became the largest cryptocurrency exchange in terms of trading volume in April 2018. By early 2019, the exchange achieved a daily trading volume of $500 million.
