Swede Roger Nils-Jonas Karlsson was sentenced to 15 years in prison for stealing over $ 16 million in Bitcoin.

The Swedish resident – Roger Nils-Jonas Karlsson – plead guilty of luring at least 3,575 people into a fraudulent Bitcoin investment system. According to the investigation, he embezzled more than $ 16 million through his illegal activities and will serve in federal prison for the next 180 months.

The Ministry of Justice (DOJ) announced that between 2012 and 2019, 47-year-old Roger Nils-Jonas Karlsson flew over thousands of people in a typical “Ponzi scheme”. During this time, the criminal persuaded more than 3,500 people to send him money in Bitcoin and other digital assets that he later used for his personal gain.

Nine years ago, the Swede and his company – Eastern Metal Securities (EMS) – began embroiling people in a sophisticated scam. Karlsson promised his investors a final payout of 1.15 kilograms of gold (around $ 45,000 at the time) per $ 100 share.

In addition, he gave his victims fake financial statements and assured them that their funds (mostly in the form of cryptocurrencies) were in safe hands.

The scam continued until Karlsson was arrested in Thailand in 2019 and then extradited to the United States.

“The investigation into the Roger Karlsson scam uncovered a terrifying callous plot spanning more than a decade in which Karlsson targeted thousands of victims, including vulnerable seniors, on lavish international vacations.”

Karlsson’s sentence could be longer, but he has pleaded guilty on all charges and will serve 15 years in prison. In addition, US authorities ordered the seizure of the Thai resort along with other properties as part of the sentence. He also needs to regain the nearly $ 16 million he stole from the victims.

During a search of his home, officials found toxic elements such as cadmium arsenide, cadmium metal and large amounts of hydrochloric acid, which were believed to have been bought with BTC. Siesser pleaded guilty and will serve in federal prison for the next 12 years.
